ANALYSIS OF SKEWED BRIDGES BY THE COUPLING OF FINITE ELEMENT AND BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHODS

In this paper, the analysis of skewed bridges using the coupling technique of finite element and boundary element methods is presented. The geometry of the skewed bridge is modeled using linearand quadratic boundary elements. At the corner of the bridge deck, the torsional effect is considered in the boundary element formulation. The finite elements and boundaryelements are connected at a number of interface nodes in the longitudinal direction. The finite element equations are transformed into boundary element equations and the compatibility interface mechanism required to combine the two methods is developed. Two skewed bridges are analyzed using the combined method to illustrate the performance and the advantages of the combined method over the other numerical techniques. The results obtained using boundary element and finite element methods are in a good agreement, where the maximum difference in deflection and moment results is about 4%. The simplicity and reduction in input data are illustrated in example two, where the input data is reduced by more than 80%.
